5.1 Management Protection
Lushan has been got protected officially by emperors of the past dynasties since ancient times: in 404 A.D. a high-ranking official called Heng Xuan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty(137-420) issued a decree to limit and restrain Buddhists from holding rituals or giving religious doctrines throughout the country, but “with the exception of Lushan because of the holy spirits residing here”; the second emperor of the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), Zhu Li, once issued an imperial edict to close up the mountain in order to facilitate afforestation; the government of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912)began to set up police office in Lushan. The government of National China established forestry institution in Lushan in 1911 and Lushan Administration Bureau was set up in 1926.
The People’s Government has been paying attaching much more importance to managerial protection of Lushan since China was founded in 1949. Lushan became one of the first National Park in 1982, and subsequently both Jiangxi Provincial Lushan Scenic and Historical Interest Administration Bureau and Lushan Nature Reserve were established, and from then on Lushan has entered into a new period of protection in a scientific way and of development in an ordered manner. In addition, Lushan Global Geopark Administration Committee made a series of protective plans to accomplish level-to-level administration, meanwhile classifying 159 key geological heritages landscapes.
5.2 Scientific Research and Popularization
Construction of a data bank for global geoparks was completed in Lushan in 2005. Its website was made known to the public by the official website of Beijing Geologic Heritage Office of IUGS. In 2006, Lushan Global Geopark conducted a series of scientific researches in collaboration with the Institute of Geomechanics of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. Lushan Scientific Research Base, newly established by the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Lushan in July of 2011, will carry out related scientific research and teaching activities in Lushan on a long-term basis.
After its establishment, Lushan Global Geopark published hosts of popular science reading materials. “Publicity Week Activities on the Lushan Global Geopark” is held every year, and in the meanwhile popular science publicity pamphlets or other publicity reading materials are often distributed to visitors.
Teenagers’ summer camp activities on earthscience in every summer vacation have been held since 2004, focusing on popularization of earthscience knowledge. In 2011, “Summer Camp Ac-
tivity on Science, Technology and Culture for College Students from Three Parts of China – China’s Mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan” also took place. Nowadays a couple of ten thousand teachers and students from Geological University of China, Nan Jing University, Hu Nan Normal University and colleges and universities of Jiang Xi Province come
here having going on field trips in Lushan every year. To advance primary-school pupils and
middle-school students to have a deep love over their hometown in Lushan area and to arouse their strong interest in science, popular science educational activities of various forms have already been extensively carried out inside or outside classroom. Lushan has become a big schoolroom in which teenagers are able to look into the Earth and to learn earthscience knowledge.
Fixed up as early as in 1978 was an “Exhibition Room of Quaternary Glaciers” in Lushan Museum, on the basis of which Lushan Geo-Museum was built later on. In 2012, a newly-built Lushan Geo-Museum came into sight.
5.3 Exchanges and Communication
A website called www.China-lushan.com was established in Lushan and formally went into operation in February, 2000. Through this vehicle, exchanges between geoparks have been streng- thened by way of doing publicity work on tourism, increasing cooperation internally and external- ly, carrying out mutual exhibition activities at each other countries, and therefore has raised the name of Lushan to such an extent that it is known to the outside world. To enhance exchange and cooperation between geoparks, Lushan has been taking an active part in global geopark network activities. In 2007, the 2nd International Symposium on the Development within Geoparks was held in Lushan. In September, 2007, Lushan Global Geopark signed a cooperative agreement with Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geopark (Germany), and established relationships in the form of twin parks with Marble Arch Caves Park of the Northern Ireland, Alps Eisenwurzen Park in Austria and Petrified Forest of Lesvos in Greece one after another.
In October, 2009, Lushan acted as an initiator to set up World Famous Mountain Association in Lushan, where the 1st World Famous Mountains Conference was held. In October, 2010, the 2nd World Famous Mountains ConferenceConference and International Forest Art symposium was held in Lushan. In both 2010 and 2011, Lushan invited artists of International Forest Art Association to set up an art gallery in which works of “Poetic Forest art” were created and put on display. In September, 2011, Lushan sent a delegation to Hood in the USA to take part in the 3rd World Famous Mountains Conference and in September,2012,Lushan delegation attended the 4th World Famous Mountains Conference held in Romania.
In 2011, an international summer vacation school was run in Lushan, in collaboration with the Kuling American Association and Nan Jing University, recruiting students from the USA, Australia, South Africa, etc. to take part in the summer vacation training course of the Chinese culture.

Protection of geologic heritages has proved to be a fundamental element to the sustainable development of geoparks. Native inhabitants and the past managerial personnel in Lushan area have always been paying much attention to the protection of natural environment, geological heritages in particular, and thus they have really done something good to preserve a sacred mount of historic and cultural interest, a world cultural landscape heritage site having existed for one thousand years, and a global geopark, as well.
Protection nature is something meritorious done for the present, yet it will surely be beneficial to people for future of thousand years. It’s our obligation to protect the common homeland of the human beings and the earth. Let us protect Lushan hand in hand, treasure in China for our future generations!
