Zhangjiajie UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the Wulingyuan District of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province of China. With Zhangjiajie Landforms as the core of the geological heritages, it was selected as a founding member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2004 and in 2015 it became a UNESCO global geopark.Zhangjiajie Geoaprk lies in the hinterland of the Wuling Mountain, a transitional zone from the northeastern area of the Yunnan-Guizhou high plateau in Southwest China to the northwestern Hunan Province of low mountains and hills. Geographically, the geopark is located within N29°13'18''-29°27'27'', E110°18'00''-110°41'15''. It has an area of 398 km2, with elevations varying in the range of 300-1300 m.
Zhangjiajie Landforms developed from quartz sandstone formed about 300 million years ago are the core of the geological heritages in the geopark, with karst landscapes served as a foil and the well-preserved geological sections and special fossils sites as additions. While Zhangjiajie Landforms are featured mainly with more than 3000 stone peaks and pillars, over 1000 of which are higher than 200 m and the Jinbian (Golden Whip) Rock reaches even 350 m in height, they also include individual landforms of platforms, stone walls, natural bridges, stone gates, river valleys, narrow gorges, etc. These geological heritages are melted with almost undisturbed original natural eco-environments and ecological systems, and assemble a series of very distinctive and picturesque landscapes.
