Wudalianchi UGGp, with a total area of 790.11 km2 , is located in the north central region of Heilongjiang Province. It was designated as a global geopark in 2004.
Most volcanoes in the world are distributed among towering and steep mountains while the Wudalianchi volcanic clusters are scattered in mound-shaped foothills which constitute some of the most outstanding examples of a monogenetic volcanic field in the world. There are numerous NE and NW trending faults in the Earth’s crust of Wudalianchi area with the predomination of NE trending faults. Lava from the upper mantle inside the earth erupted where NE-trending faults and NW-trending faults intersected, forming 14 volcanic cones which are systematically spread like a checkerboard.
Wudalianchi Global Geopark is reputed as a ‘Natural Volcano Museum’ and an ‘Open Textbook on Volcano’ left by the volcanic activities in the Quaternary. It is composed of 14 volcanoes. Between 1720 to 1721, Laohei Volcano and Huoshao Volcano erupted, forming aa lava and pahoehoe lava. The lava also blocked Baihe River, forming five volcanic barrier lakes spreading like a string of beads. This is why it has been called Wudalianchi. The well-preserved driblet cones and dishes (or hornitos) are rare in the world. Lava caves, volcanic barrier lakes, Stone Sea, Stone River, natural cold mineral springs and other geological wonders are all so fascinating.
