One of the founding members of the European Geopark Network with Lesvos (Greece), Vulkaneifel (Germany) and Maestrazgo (Spain), the Haute-Provence Global Geopark, located in south-east France between Alps and Provence in Digne-les-Bains, is a pioneering area for the protection and enhancing of geological heritage in France and Europe, born in 1984. In 1991, the International Declaration of the Rights of the Memory of the Earth, the founding text of the Global Geoparks, was adopted in Digne-les-Bains, under the aegis of UNESCO. From the outset, the area has promoted geoheritage in association with philosophers, writers, artists, dance and theatre companies, initiating a holistic approach inherent in the concept now shared by all the world's Geoparks. 300 million years can be read in the landscapes of the Haute-Provence UGGP, whose emblematic site, the ammonite slab, is one of the 100 IUGS geological sites.
